We’ve got big plans for a Connected Nottingham .

Connected Nottingham co-ordinates and manages a series of programmes based around ICT. These programmes span communities and businesses but have one single aim in common – to equip people with improved ICT skills and knowledge.

A taste of programmes we are currently running or have been involved in, are below.

Connected Business

* eBusiness training
* WiCity

Connected Communities

* LEAP
* LEAP West

Connected Campus

LEAP WEST: Connected Communities pilot
When considering the scope of the pilot it was recognised that, although many previous community ICT bids had focussed on providing equipment for the users, the service deliverers in the community or the capacity builders were not equipped to do their job, develop ICT experience , develop content for local people or benefit from a connected ICT infrastructure.

It was decided that an ineffective ICT infrastructure and low capabilities of local support staff should be tackled in parallel with the provision of equipment and content for learners.

LEAP (Learning E-Access Project)

A Learning Access Centre bid is currently being considered which is intended to be used for a variety of projects including buildings in Clifton, Bulwell, Bestwood and a number of ICT projects around the City of Nottingham.

Accelerate Nottingham is developing the ICT proposals for Greater Nottingham Learning Partnership using the CEC strategy.  In order to inform the work of Accelerate Nottingham a pilot scheme - LEAP West is being developed.

The Lace Market, an area once dominated by the more traditional crafts of lace making and textile production, is quickly becoming the city’s most Internet friendly business district.

WiCity, run by EMNET, will provide the area with a genuine broadband network capable of far greater capacity than anything currently available.  The new network will allow businesses to work in ways that are impractical over the existing network.

As the network develops, connected companies will be able to take advantage of cutting edge applications for high broadband networks such as streamlining communications (mail, voice, video and data) and collaborative use of software.

Benefits of the network include:

o ‘always on’ connectivity with symmetrical data transfer speeds up to 8Mbps
o cheaper alternative to leased lines
o unlike DSL, data transmission speeds do not slow down the further the company is from the base stations
o more flexible than SDSL – services can be upgraded at the flick of a switch with no downtime
o exceptional reliability with an uptime of 99.99%
o offers a standard Ethernet connection, which allows you to connect a single PC or an entire office LAN straight to the Internet
o supports VPN

Through the project, funding is available to connect ten buildings to the network, giving businesses access to a flexible high speed Internet service. More information can be found here.
